Job Description

The Office of the Secretary organizes commencement events that take place Sunday, May 17 through Monday, May 18 with required meetings and trainings beginning in early May.
Ushers are expected to work effectively with Yale faculty and staff and help make Commencement memorable for our graduates and guests.

Free post-term housing on Old Campus is available on a limited basis to students who have term-time housing on campus. Preference for housing will be given to students with additional post-term obligations, such as tour guides, FOOT Leaders, and Reunion clerks. Note that reunion clerks will be able to coordinate work as Commencement ushers with their YAA responsibilities.
The position also provides meal subsidies.

 

Job Requirements

Some ushers will distribute programs at guest entrances on Commencement morning or be assigned to crowd management duties. Others will guide student processions to their seats and assist with student seating. Additional ushers will provide information, distribute materials, and offer general assistance to guests as needed.

Hired Commencement Ushers are required to be available from Monday, May 11, 2026, through Tuesday, May 19, 2026, for all Commencement events, tasks, and mandatory trainings. This also includes other work opportunities that would be available. Please review the important dates below and ensure your availability before applying.

All ushers are needed for:

Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 3:00pm - 5:00pm for Commencement Usher TrainingThis training is in-person and mandatory. Hired ushers will be dismissed if they do not attend this training.

Sunday, May 17, from 7:00 am to 11:30 am for Baccalaureate Old Campus
Sunday, May 17, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for ClassDay exercises on Old Campus
Monday, May 18, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for Commencement exercises on Old Campus

Ushers will be expected to arrive at each of the locations before their start time and remain at the location afterward. Ushers are not needed for the residential college diploma ceremonies that follow the Commencement ceremony on Old Campus. You will be able to attend your college's diploma ceremony if you would like to.
Ushers will be hired on a rolling basis. You will be notified once a decision has been made regarding your application.

In addition to working during Commencement and atone or more assigned events, all ushers are expected to attend all mandatory trainings beginning in early May. Ushers will be paid at their hourly rate for attending training sessions.

Please note, Hiring take be on a rolling basis and end on Monday, April 13, 2026. 

Compensation $17.00/hour
