Job Description

Position: Wellness Fellow 
Work Site: Yale University – New Haven, CT  
Dates: Wednesday, June 17 – Friday, July 31, 2026 (3pm) on campus 
Compensation: $5,800 (plus free housing and meals since this is a residential position) 

Work Schedule: Full-time Wellness Staff are expected to work full-time on a shift rotation (8-hour shifts) from the start of the session to the end, which includes weekends and some overnight hours supporting programmatic needs around student experience. These shifts are established as a team during in-person Orientation. Wellness Staff should expect more responsibilities during participants’ free time, meals, evenings, and occasional overnight.?Facilitates Family Time, which is a social identity development and group teamwork curriculum for a cohort of 10-15 participants across all three program sessions.

Job Description 

Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) is a summer academic enrichment residential program for outstanding high school students from around the world that is administered by Yale’s Office of International Affairs (OIA). In 2026, YYGS will host up to 650 high school students at a time in a series of three 2-weeks sessions. Sessions will cover academic topics in STEM, social sciences, and cross-disciplinary areas. 

 

Around 100 staff members work at YYGS per two-week period, split across three sessions housed in two Residential Colleges on campus. Wellness Staff are responsible for maintaining a safe and welcoming YYGS community, triaging the overall wellness of all YYGS Participants and staff during the program, and facilitating residential activities and program operations.? 

 

Members of the Wellness Staff triage illnesses and injuries of YYGS participants and staff, maintain accurate wellness records, and collaborate in the oversight of the YYGS Wellness Office. They encourage healthy habits and ensure the well-being of all individuals in the YYGS community through implementing wellness educational/social engagement activities for participants individually, and as a team. Due to the nature of this program, Wellness Staff may also be asked to help perform other duties as assigned.?? 

 

Duties and Responsibilities? 

  • Collaboratively maintain the Wellness Office, especially during walk-in hours during free time and meals. 

  • Participate in overseeing the implementation of residential curriculum social educational program wide activities: 

  •  Family Time - “YYGS Families” are comprised of one staff member and 10-15 participants; which meet on a regular basis in the morning, and the goal of Family Time is to foster a tight-knit community for the participants during their time at YYGS. While supporting their social emotional needs and serving as a mentor. 

  • Opportunities in Higher Education- Join a panel discussion with fellow staff members to share and learn about educational paths, personal experiences, and helpful resources for life beyond high school.  

  • Speaker Series (2): Like TED talks, students audition to give a five to seven-minute talk in front of their YYGS classmates on a topic they’re passionate about and want to share. The Residential Life Team organizes the selection of speakers, helps participants prepare, and organizes the event for all 650 participants.  While also giving thoughtful feedback to enhance their presentation materials or public speaking abilities. 

  • Talent Show: A program favorite! A program tradition! Organize a talent show for participants to show off their skills. 

  • Free Time: Each evening after 9pm, weekend mornings, and on a few occasional afternoons. The Residential Life Team is responsible for providing supervision and offering optional activities for students to enjoy.

  • Each Wellness Fellow is required to host 1 event per session. 2/3 events can be a collaboration with up to 3 other staff members. 

  • Work with the rest of the Residential Life Team to run a participant check-in/check-out. Check-in duties include ensuring that all participants successfully arrive at the program, distributing     nametags, and helping families and students orient themselves. Check-out procedures include room inspections and collecting Prox cards, and room keys. 

  • Ensure that all participants respect the evening curfew 10pm, and quiet hours 11pm-8am.  

  • Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all YYGS participants and staff. 

  • Perform tasks such as recording temperature, blood pressure, and respiratory rate. 

  • Triage illnesses and injuries. If participants or staff members need to seek further medical care, escort them to Yale Health or Yale New Haven Hospital; this may include

  • escorting the participant and remaining with them, as necessary. 

  • Ensure proper documentation of participant encounters. 

  • Report any serious conditions and status of participant care to the Leadership Team.

  • Maintain adequate first aid and appropriate wellness supplies.

  • Follow the precautions of infectious diseases to prevent the overall spread of organisms.

  • Follow assigned policies, procedures, and restraints, and always maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Perform other functions at the direction of the ADRL and Leadership Team.

  • Has experience working on a team and demonstrates the ability to work well with others. 

  • Detail oriented and supportive to students in distress. 

  • Comfortable working with teenagers (ages 16-18).

  • Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to help administer the program.

  • Is willing and able to live on campus during orientation, when the program is in session, and on the days leading up to each session. 

  • Adheres to the appropriate wellness of care procedures and policies.

  • Available for occasional coordination weekend meetings (online) in Spring 2026 
     

Experience and Training

  • Required: Successful completion of background check 

  • Required: First Aid and/or Mental Health First Aid certified prior to arrival on site 

  • Preferred: Current student pursuing a degree in the medical field or mental health field (nursing, public health, physician's assistant, counseling, medicine, etc.)?or relevant experience 

  • Preferred: Experience working with teenage population in an emergency or primary care setting
