Job Description

Yale Facilities / Recycling and the Office of Sustainability are seeking undergraduate and graduate students to serve as Program Assistants during Spring Salvage, April 25- May 22, 2025.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Spring Salvage is an annual resource recovery program coordinated by Yale Recycling and the Office of Sustainability during undergraduate move-out. Soft items (clothes, shoes, towels, and bedding) and hard items (chairs, bookshelves, beds, futon frames, and other large items) are collected and donated to a local or regional organization. In 2025, over 45,000 lbs. of material were collected and donated.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Program Assistants will play critical roles during Spring Salvage by hauling donated and recyclable items from student residences and facilitating dormitory move-out operations. Work will consist primarily of moving furniture, room furnishings, and other items donated by students. Opportunities to work extra hours doing miscellaneous facilities tasks, such as cleaning campus billboards, may be provided.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a willingness to work long hours outside in all types of weather; be able to handle and haul recyclables, garbage, and donated and/or discarded clothing; and be able to comfortably and safely lift 50 lbs. Candidates should also be punctual, reliable, and proactive, with strong communication skills, good judgment, and a sense of humor. During the planning and preparation period in April, Program Assistants are required to attend an orientation meeting. During the two move-out periods in April and May, Program Assistants are expected to work full-day shifts up to or exceeding 8 hours as needed. Program Assistants are required to have a cell phone where they can be reached by all parties during Spring Salvage.

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT:

All Spring Salvage Program Assistants must be able to work during underclass move-out (Phase 1, April 25-May 11) and senior move-out (Phase 2, May 19-23).

Please note that there may also be work in between Phases 1 and 2.

Students are allowed to work a maximum of 19 hours during weeks when classes are in session and a maximum of 40 hours during weeks after classes end. Work schedules will be prepared in advance, but they are subject to change during the program due to increased or decreased need. Any day that may have been scheduled for a full 8 hours of work may be less; in such an event, workers will be asked to leave early. Spring Salvage Program Assistants will be managed by Facilities/Recycling and the Office of Sustainability. The Office will work with undergraduate students to obtain post-term housing as needed.

TO APPLY: Candidates must submit a one-paragraph statement of interest to maria.gutierrez@yale.edu with the subject line “Spring Salvage Program Assistant.” Applicants will be asked to submit their schedule and to indicate if they will need post-term housing.
